Au-Pairs

  • Do I need a visa for an au-pair stay in Germany?

Au-pairs from the European Union (EU), the European Economic Area (EEA), and Switzerland can enter and work without a visa. They are not subject to any labour market restrictions.Au-pairs from other countries (third countries) need a residence permit (visa or residence title). The visa must be applied for at a German embassy or consulate before entering the country. In some cases, proof of health insurance is already required at this stage. And don’t forget: A valid passport from your home country is required for entry and the entire stay.

  • How do you find out which host families and Au-pairs are a good match?

Think carefully in advance about what criteria are important to you. Courtesy and mutual sympathy are, of course, the most important. But also, points like diet, hobbies, and allergies matter. A vegan person might not fit with meat lovers, a couch potato might not fit with a sporty family, and someone with a dog allergy may not fit with a Golden Retriever in the household. Write down everything that matters, clearly state your expectations, and communicate thoroughly with each other, ideally through a video call.

  • How far in advance should you start looking for an Au-pair?

You should begin the search as soon as you have decided to host an Au-pair. This is especially true if you have very specific ideas about where your Au-pair should come from or which language they should speak. Many German host families prefer young people from English- or Spanish-speaking countries. However, there is also a high level of interest in coming to Germany as an Au-pair, especially among young people from Eastern Europe and Asia. So it might take a little time before you find the right match.

  • Do I need to be reachable during a business trip?

When you're on a business trip, it’s not realistic to act as if you’re still at your desk. There will be moments without reception or during security checks when you simply can’t respond. And don’t forget the very reason you're travelling: your actual appointments. It’s a good idea to make sure you're not overwhelmed while away. For example, arrange for a backup in your team beforehand. Setting up an out-of-office reply can also help – even if it's just to let people know you’re currently hard to reach and will get back to them later.

  • How to counteract jetlag?

It’s impossible to completely avoid the effects of jetlag, especially when crossing multiple time zones. Jetlag catches up with everyone who travels across time zones. However, there are things you can do to minimize its effects. One helpful tip is to gradually adjust your sleep schedule before your trip to match the time zone of your destination. If you’re traveling east, go to bed earlier to prepare, and if you’re traveling west, go to bed later. Once you arrive, staying hydrated, getting plenty of natural light, and taking short naps to fight fatigue will help you cope with jetlag.

  • Do I need a visa to work as a caregiver in Germany?

Whether you need a visa depends on your country of origin. If you're a citizen of an EU or EEA country or Switzerland, you can enter Germany and start working without a visa. If you're from a non-EU country, you'll need a residence permit. Your professional qualifications will also be reviewed as part of a recognition process.

  • How can I legally employ a foreign caregiver?

If you want to bring a caregiver from abroad to take care of a dependent person, you have two options to legally employ them.Employer model: The dependent person or a family member hires the caregiver directly. As the employer, the family must handle all formalities, including determining working hours and duties, paying taxes and social security contributions, and registering with the relevant statutory accident insurance.Secondment model: The dependent person or family member hires a foreign company through an agency, which then sends the caregiver. You are essentially using the services of a foreign company and paying a monthly fee as specified in the contract.

  • How to plan a group trip successfully?

Planning group trips is a challenge, but with a little organizational skill, you can handle it. Here are three tips to help you out:Be clear: Collect all suggestions regarding destinations, transportation, accommodation, activities, and travel dates, and let the group democratically decide when and what should happen, and what costs to expect. Even if you're planning the trip on your own, keep everyone informed. This way, everyone will have a clear picture of the plan, and you'll avoid long discussions and misunderstandings before and during the trip.Save money: When booking for the group, you can often get group discounts. This applies to travel tickets, accommodations, and even travel insurance.Stay flexible: Allow for some free time during the trip. This way, your fellow travelers can decide whether to take a break or explore on their own. Everyone needs some personal time during a trip.

Hervorragend!“

„From my personal experience whenever I had a question and made a phone call the male staff is usually not so helpful. He kept on saying everything is written on the contract". Yes, everything is written, but I made the call because I wanted to make sure. He made me feel unwelcome and I felt like not calling back anymore which is really bad because I don't feel like staying with your health insurance. I am happy that the reimbursement went through quickly. Thank you.“
