This might be useful for you
Here you'll find answers to frequently asked questions about our travel insurances. We've gathered the most important information to help you feel well prepared. If you still have questions, don’t hesitate to get in touch with us.
-
Yes, you definitely need health insurance for your au pair stay in Germany. But don’t worry - it is easier than it sounds. In Germany, your host parents are legally required to arrange insurance coverage for you during your stay.Learn more
-
Can au pair costs be deducted from tax?
Yes, some of the costs associated with an au pair, including pocket money, accommodation and meals based on the official benefit-in-kind rates, agency placement fees, travel expenses and insurance, can be claimed for tax purposes as childcare expenses and household-related services. If the child being cared for is under the age of 14, you can claim up to 80% of the costs, subject to a maximum eligible amount of €6,000. This means you can deduct up to €4,800 per year.If the au pair also carries out household tasks, you can deduct 20% of costs of up to €20,000, with a maximum deduction of €4,000.It is best to specify the percentage split between childcare and household tasks in the au pair contract. This gives you supporting documentation for the information you submit to the tax office.Learn more -
Can I cancel my contract early?
Yes, you can end your contract early by providing a reason. A phone call is enough.Of course, you can also send us a message using the contact form. If the contract ends as scheduled, no cancellation is necessary.Learn more -

Yes, you can change your plan at any time before the contract starts. If your contract has already begun, you can simply apply online for the new plan. We’ll cancel your current contract and set up the new one for you.Learn more -
Do au pairs need accident insurance?
Yes, au pairs must have accident insurance for the entire duration of their stay in Germany. Firstly, they are not covered by the host parents’ statutory accident insurance. Secondly, private travel accident insurance is a requirement for obtaining a visa.Special incoming insurance plans for au pairs cover this need, as they usually include health insurance, liability insurance and accident insurance. This means you can provide comprehensive protection with a single policy.Learn more
-
Do au pairs need liability insurance?
Taking out liability insurance for au pairs is not required by law, but it is strongly recommended. Au pairs come from a different cultural background, may speak only limited German and are responsible for looking after children. These factors can increase the likelihood of accidents or mishaps. The host parents’ personal liability insurance may cover damage caused to third parties by people working in their household, such as an au pair. However, it generally does not cover damage caused to the host family itself. For example, if the au pair accidentally causes a kitchen fire or injures a child, there may be no insurance coverage.A liability insurance policy taken out specifically for the au pair covers property damage and personal injury within the host family if the au pair is responsible. For this reason, liability insurance is usually included in au pair insurance packages.Learn more -
Do I need a visa for an au-pair stay in Germany?
Au-pairs from the European Union (EU), the European Economic Area (EEA), and Switzerland can enter and work without a visa. They are not subject to any labour market restrictions.Au-pairs from other countries (third countries) need a residence permit (visa or residence title). The visa must be applied for at a German embassy or consulate before entering the country. In some cases, proof of health insurance is already required at this stage. And don’t forget: A valid passport from your home country is required for entry and the entire stay.Learn more -
Does the au pair have to accompany the host family on trips abroad?
The au pair may travel abroad with the host family, but is not required to do so. If the au pair prefers to stay at home while the family is away, they may do so. In this case, everyone involved should agree on whether this period counts as working time, free time or annual leave. They should also clarify the amount of pocket money to be paid and any duties the au pair is expected to perform while the host family is away.If the au pair joins the trip and looks after the children, the trip abroad counts as regular working time. In this case, the host family must cover the au pair’s expenses, including travel, accommodation and meals. The agreed pocket money must also continue to be paid. If the au pair does not work during the trip, the host parents may make a different arrangement. The destination is also important if the au pair needs a visa for the country being visited. Travelling to a country within the Schengen Area should not normally be a problem, as a German visa is also valid there. However, if the trip is to a non-Schengen country, such as Turkey, you should always check the entry requirements in advance.Learn more -

How do you find out which host families and Au-pairs are a good match?
Think carefully in advance about what criteria are important to you. Courtesy and mutual sympathy are, of course, the most important. But also, points like diet, hobbies, and allergies matter. A vegan person might not fit with meat lovers, a couch potato might not fit with a sporty family, and someone with a dog allergy may not fit with a Golden Retriever in the household. Write down everything that matters, clearly state your expectations, and communicate thoroughly with each other, ideally through a video call.Learn more -
How does the billing work during a doctor’s visit?
When visiting a doctor's office or hospital, present the treatment voucher that you received along with all insurance documents after signing up for your insurance. The treatment voucher lists the benefits covered by your health insurance. Please point out that some treatments, as indicated on the voucher, require prior approval or the submission of a treatment and cost plan before the treatment starts.Typically, medical practices and hospitals will directly settle the bill with us upon presentation of the treatment voucher. If the bill is sent to you, you can simply submit it in its original form along with the prescription. Please also provide the insurance number and your bank account details (IBAN, BIC, bank name, and account holder’s name), so we can reimburse you quickly. In case of any uncertainties, our claims department is happy to provide assistance.Learn more -
How does the refund of overpaid contributions work?
KLEMMER calculates on a daily basis. This means that if your contract ends early, any overpaid contributions will be refunded to you.Learn more
-
How far in advance should you start looking for an Au-pair?
You should begin the search as soon as you have decided to host an Au-pair. This is especially true if you have very specific ideas about where your Au-pair should come from or which language they should speak. Many German host families prefer young people from English- or Spanish-speaking countries. However, there is also a high level of interest in coming to Germany as an Au-pair, especially among young people from Eastern Europe and Asia. So it might take a little time before you find the right match.Learn more -
How long can I stay in Germany as an au pair?
Your au pair stay must last at least six months and no longer than one year. The exact period must be specified in an au pair contract. If you hold a passport from an EU country, you benefit from freedom of movement within the EU. There is no fixed limit on how long you may stay, so you can remain in Germany after your time as an au pair. People from non-EU countries may also have options to extend their stay afterwards, for example to attend a language course, complete vocational training or study at a university.Learn more -
Is my data secure?
Yes, your online application is processed via a secure connection. Your data is used solely for the purpose of fulfilling the insurance contract. You can find more information on our data protection page.Learn more -
Is there a premium refund?
Some plans offer premium refunds under certain conditions. Please check the product information for details.Learn more -
What are an au pair’s main responsibilities?
An au pair’s main responsibility is to look after the host family’s child or children. Helping them get dressed, brush their teeth, accompanying them on their way to school or other activities, playing with them and helping with homework are all typical tasks. You will also take on light household duties, such as setting the table, loading and unloading the dishwasher or perhaps walking the dog. A written contract lists your responsibilities in detail and makes them binding.More demanding tasks, such as cleaning windows, trimming hedges in the garden or washing the dog, are not normally part of an au pair’s duties unless they are expressly included in the contract.Learn more -

„Zufrieden war ich nur bis ich dann die Versicherung in Anspruch nehmen musste. Für Medikamente werden 5,00 EUR in Abzug gebracht. Der Hinweis darauf findet sich nur versteckt in den Versicherungsbedingungen. Rechnung wurde auch erst erstattet, nachdem ich nach 14 Tagen mal nachgefragt habe, warum meine Mail immer noch nicht beantwortet wurde. Also Weiterempfehlung: nur bedingt.“

Hervorragend!“
