  • Do I need a visa for an au-pair stay in Germany?

Au-pairs from the European Union (EU), the European Economic Area (EEA), and Switzerland can enter and work without a visa. They are not subject to any labour market restrictions.
Au-pairs from other countries (third countries) need a residence permit (visa or residence title).

The visa must be applied for at a German embassy or consulate before entering the country. In some cases, proof of health insurance is already required at this stage.

And don’t forget: A valid passport from your home country is required for entry and the entire stay.

    Everthing about the topic
  • How do you find out which host families and Au-pairs are a good match?

Think carefully in advance about what criteria are important to you. Courtesy and mutual sympathy are, of course, the most important. But also, points like diet, hobbies, and allergies matter. A vegan person might not fit with meat lovers, a couch potato might not fit with a sporty family, and someone with a dog allergy may not fit with a Golden Retriever in the household. Write down everything that matters, clearly state your expectations, and communicate thoroughly with each other, ideally through a video call.

    Everthing about the topic
  • How does the billing work during a doctor’s visit?

When visiting a doctor's office or hospital, present the treatment voucher that you received along with all insurance documents after signing up for your insurance. The treatment voucher lists the benefits covered by your health insurance. Please point out that some treatments, as indicated on the voucher, require prior approval or the submission of a treatment and cost plan before the treatment starts.

Typically, medical practices and hospitals will directly settle the bill with us upon presentation of the treatment voucher. If the bill is sent to you, you can simply submit it in its original form along with the prescription. Please also provide the insurance number and your bank account details (IBAN, BIC, bank name, and account holder’s name), so we can reimburse you quickly.

In case of any uncertainties, our claims department is happy to provide assistance.

  • How does the refund of overpaid contributions work?

KLEMMER calculates on a daily basis. This means that if your contract ends early, any overpaid contributions will be refunded to you.

    Everthing about the topic
  • How far in advance should you start looking for an Au-pair?

You should begin the search as soon as you have decided to host an Au-pair. This is especially true if you have very specific ideas about where your Au-pair should come from or which language they should speak. Many German host families prefer young people from English- or Spanish-speaking countries. However, there is also a high level of interest in coming to Germany as an Au-pair, especially among young people from Eastern Europe and Asia. So it might take a little time before you find the right match.

Yes, your online application is processed via a secure connection. Your data is used solely for the purpose of fulfilling the insurance contract. You can find more information on our data protection page.

  • Is there a premium refund?

Some plans offer premium refunds under certain conditions. Please check the product information for details.

  • What are the advantages of KLEMMER insurance?

The main advantage of KLEMMER insurance solutions is the precise daily billing. With us, you only pay for the days you want to be insured. Additionally, we only offer policies with no deductible. In the event of a claim, the insurance covers all costs. Furthermore, you benefit from an easy online application process. When you book insurance on our website, you will receive an email shortly afterward with the insurance confirmation and all other documents you need for consulates and authorities.

    Everthing about the topic
  • What costs are associated with an Au-pair stay?

The legislator requires host families to cover certain direct and indirect costs.

Direct payments include a monthly allowance, a contribution towards language course fees, and an Au-pair insurance. Indirect costs include providing a private room, meals, and two vacation days per month. You should plan for approximately 800 euros per month.

    Everthing about the topic
  • What documents will I receive?

You will receive your insurance certificate, consumer information, treatment vouchers, and a guide from us. The insurance certificate proves which product you have purchased with us. It also serves as proof of insurance, for example, for authorities. The consumer information provides detailed information about the contract terms. You will need the treatment vouchers to present in doctor's offices. This way, the medical staff knows which services the insurance covers and how they can bill for them.

Additionally, you will receive an insurance card in the size of a bank card (EC card). The payment plan, showing when each contribution is due, will be sent to you separately.

    Everthing about the topic
  • What does “Au-pair” mean?

“Au-pair” is a French term that means “on equal terms” or “mutual exchange.” Au-pairs live with a host family in another country for a period of time, helping with childcare and light household tasks. In return, they receive free board and lodging, a small allowance, and the opportunity to learn the language and experience the culture of the host country. Traditionally, most au-pairs have been young women, but the number of young men is steadily increasing.

    Everthing about the topic
  • What does “Demi-pair” mean?

Demi-pairs are young people from abroad who live with a host family for an extended period and mainly help with childcare. “Demi” means “half,” and refers to their reduced working hours compared to traditional au-pairs – usually around 15 to 20 hours per week. Why the part-time setup? Unlike au-pairs, whose main focus is on childcare, demi-pairs split their time between the host family and language school. A typical demi-pair schedule: language course in the morning, family duties in the afternoon.

    Everthing about the topic
  • What happens if a direct debit cannot be processed?

If a direct debit is returned, for example due to cancellation, incorrect information, or insufficient account funds, your insurance coverage is at risk. This should definitely be avoided. First, we do not provide insurance benefits in case of payment arrears, and second, additional costs may be incurred for the extra effort.

    Everthing about the topic
  • What insurance coverage do Au-pairs need?

Host families are required to insure Au-pairs against illnesses and accidents for the entire duration of their stay. Placement agencies recommend also taking out liability insurance. Specifically for Au-pairs (including Demi-pairs and Granny-Au-pairs), there are tailored, customizable all-in-one insurance packages that cover all common risks from the first to the last day of the stay.

    Everthing about the topic
  • What is a Granny Au-pair?

Granny Au-pairs are older individuals who live with a host family abroad for a while and, in exchange for room and board, help with household chores and childcare. Unlike the traditional Au-pair model, official regulations regarding age limits and payment do not apply. Granny Au-pairs and their host families have more flexibility in their arrangements.

„The speed at which my claim was reimbursed was impressive. Thank you! A representative did give me an incorrect email address to send my claim though (there were typos in the email address provided), so that took a bit of time to sort out.“

„From my personal experience whenever I had a question and made a phone call the male staff is usually not so helpful. He kept on saying everything is written on the contract". Yes, everything is written, but I made the call because I wanted to make sure. He made me feel unwelcome and I felt like not calling back anymore which is really bad because I don't feel like staying with your health insurance. I am happy that the reimbursement went through quickly. Thank you.“
