FAQ & Hilfe für Au-Pairs

  • Do I need a visa for an au-pair stay in Germany?

Au-pairs from the European Union (EU), the European Economic Area (EEA), and Switzerland can enter and work without a visa. They are not subject to any labour market restrictions.
Au-pairs from other countries (third countries) need a residence permit (visa or residence title).

The visa must be applied for at a German embassy or consulate before entering the country. In some cases, proof of health insurance is already required at this stage.

And don’t forget: A valid passport from your home country is required for entry and the entire stay.

  • How do you find out which host families and Au-pairs are a good match?

Think carefully in advance about what criteria are important to you. Courtesy and mutual sympathy are, of course, the most important. But also, points like diet, hobbies, and allergies matter. A vegan person might not fit with meat lovers, a couch potato might not fit with a sporty family, and someone with a dog allergy may not fit with a Golden Retriever in the household. Write down everything that matters, clearly state your expectations, and communicate thoroughly with each other, ideally through a video call.

  • How does the billing work during a doctor’s visit?

When visiting a doctor's office or hospital, present the treatment voucher that you received along with all insurance documents after signing up for your insurance. The treatment voucher lists the benefits covered by your health insurance. Please point out that some treatments, as indicated on the voucher, require prior approval or the submission of a treatment and cost plan before the treatment starts.

Typically, medical practices and hospitals will directly settle the bill with us upon presentation of the treatment voucher. If the bill is sent to you, you can simply submit it in its original form along with the prescription. Please also provide the insurance number and your bank account details (IBAN, BIC, bank name, and account holder’s name), so we can reimburse you quickly.

In case of any uncertainties, our claims department is happy to provide assistance.

  • How far in advance should you start looking for an Au-pair?

You should begin the search as soon as you have decided to host an Au-pair. This is especially true if you have very specific ideas about where your Au-pair should come from or which language they should speak. Many German host families prefer young people from English- or Spanish-speaking countries. However, there is also a high level of interest in coming to Germany as an Au-pair, especially among young people from Eastern Europe and Asia. So it might take a little time before you find the right match.

    Everthing about the topic
  • What costs are associated with an Au-pair stay?

The legislator requires host families to cover certain direct and indirect costs.

Direct payments include a monthly allowance, a contribution towards language course fees, and an Au-pair insurance. Indirect costs include providing a private room, meals, and two vacation days per month. You should plan for approximately 800 euros per month.

  • What does “Au-pair” mean?

“Au-pair” is a French term that means “on equal terms” or “mutual exchange.” Au-pairs live with a host family in another country for a period of time, helping with childcare and light household tasks. In return, they receive free board and lodging, a small allowance, and the opportunity to learn the language and experience the culture of the host country. Traditionally, most au-pairs have been young women, but the number of young men is steadily increasing.

    Everthing about the topic
  • What does “Demi-pair” mean?

Demi-pairs are young people from abroad who live with a host family for an extended period and mainly help with childcare. “Demi” means “half,” and refers to their reduced working hours compared to traditional au-pairs – usually around 15 to 20 hours per week. Why the part-time setup? Unlike au-pairs, whose main focus is on childcare, demi-pairs split their time between the host family and language school. A typical demi-pair schedule: language course in the morning, family duties in the afternoon.

  • What insurance coverage do Au-pairs need?

Host families are required to insure Au-pairs against illnesses and accidents for the entire duration of their stay. Placement agencies recommend also taking out liability insurance. Specifically for Au-pairs (including Demi-pairs and Granny-Au-pairs), there are tailored, customizable all-in-one insurance packages that cover all common risks from the first to the last day of the stay.

    Everthing about the topic
  • What is a Granny Au-pair?

Granny Au-pairs are older individuals who live with a host family abroad for a while and, in exchange for room and board, help with household chores and childcare. Unlike the traditional Au-pair model, official regulations regarding age limits and payment do not apply. Granny Au-pairs and their host families have more flexibility in their arrangements.

    Everthing about the topic
  • What questions should host families expect from their au pair?

Agencies often prepare au pairs for their introductory calls with host families by providing question lists to help them find out if the family is a good match. At the beginning, it’s important to introduce all family members – including pets, if any. Then, be ready to describe how your daily life is organized: from morning routines and work or school hours to mealtimes and bedtime stories. The same applies to leisure time and weekends – especially if there are regular hobbies or set activities. Also important are preferences, habits, and dislikes: What meals are often served? What games are played? Does anyone in the family have health conditions? If your au pair doesn’t ask about these things, take the initiative. It helps avoid misunderstandings later – especially once they’ve already moved in.

    Everthing about the topic
  • What requirements must the Au-pair and host family meet?

Au-pairs must be between 18 and 26 years old. The stay as an Au-pair must last at least six months and no longer than one year. The host family should have German as their native language. If German is not the native language but is only the family language, no parent should come from the Au-pair’s home country. Additionally, at least one minor child must live in the host family.

    Everthing about the topic
  • What should we, as host parents, do if we don't get along with the au-pair?

Most issues between host parents and their au-pair can be resolved through an open conversation. Honestly explain your concerns and ask the au-pair for their perspective as well. Cultural differences often lead to misunderstandings, and after such an exchange, you will likely understand each other better.

If the conflicts cannot be resolved, the au-pair contract can be terminated with notice. Contact the placement agency so they can quickly find a new host family for the au-pair.

    Everthing about the topic
  • Who should take out insurance for the au pair?

In Germany, it is common for the host family to take out and pay for the au pair's insurance. For au pairs from non-EU countries, it is necessary to have private health insurance that is valid for the entire stay and whose documents must be presented to the German embassy. EU nationals, on the other hand, can use the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), which covers certain but not all services. For example, home insurance often does not cover return transport costs. Therefore, it is recommended to take out additional private health insurance.

Hervorragend!“

„From my personal experience whenever I had a question and made a phone call the male staff is usually not so helpful. He kept on saying everything is written on the contract". Yes, everything is written, but I made the call because I wanted to make sure. He made me feel unwelcome and I felt like not calling back anymore which is really bad because I don't feel like staying with your health insurance. I am happy that the reimbursement went through quickly. Thank you.“
