In Germany, it is common for the host family to take out and pay for the au pair's insurance. For au pairs from non-EU countries, it is necessary to have private health insurance that is valid for the entire stay and whose documents must be presented to the German embassy. EU nationals, on the other hand, can use the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), which covers certain but not all services. For example, home insurance often does not cover return transport costs. Therefore, it is recommended to take out additional private health insurance.

You can find a lot of valuable information about au pair stays on the website of the Association of Au Pair Agents, Host Families, and Au Pairs, registered with the Bundestag.
