An au pair’s main responsibility is to look after the host family’s child or children. Helping them get dressed, brush their teeth, accompanying them on their way to school or other activities, playing with them and helping with homework are all typical tasks.
You will also take on light household duties, such as setting the table, loading and unloading the dishwasher or perhaps walking the dog. A written contract lists your responsibilities in detail and makes them binding.
More demanding tasks, such as cleaning windows, trimming hedges in the garden or washing the dog, are not normally part of an au pair’s duties unless they are expressly included in the contract.
