Your au pair stay must last at least six months and no longer than one year. The exact period must be specified in an au pair contract.
If you hold a passport from an EU country, you benefit from freedom of movement within the EU. There is no fixed limit on how long you may stay, so you can remain in Germany after your time as an au pair. People from non-EU countries may also have options to extend their stay afterwards, for example to attend a language course, complete vocational training or study at a university.
Tip
On the Make it in Germany portal, the German Federal Government provides information for people interested in immigrating to Germany and explains the different routes available.
